If you served in the Armed Forces in France in the early 60's, you got your
Armed Forces Radio from "AFN France". 10-watt FM repeaters were located at
many military bases, and were fed via land-line, using French PT&T circuits.
On most of those lines there was a nice, annoying whine, riding along with
the audio.
AFN France used Level-Devils at the repeater sites. Whenever that infernal
expander kicked in, you'd hear a rush of noise; most noticeably, that
wonderful whine-o would jump up 10 db or so....
