Fight Looms Over Internet Radio Royalty Rates
[]

November 3, 2005

The battle over Internet radio song royalties could be starting up
once again. On the one side, the Digital Media Association (DiMA) has
filed a proposal with the Copyright Royalty Board, setting new rates
and terms for royalties for Internet radio. DiMA suggests that
broadcasters pay 5.5 percent of revenues, nearly half of the current
rate of 10.9 percent.

....

On the other hand, SoundExchange, which represents the recording
industry, wants to hike the rates for 2006-2010 up to at least 30
percent for Internet broadcasters. According to Radio And Internet
Newsletter, other proposed factors could bring the number up to 37.5
percent. Other suggested changes could more than double the current rates.
