I remember in my youth living from sky wave signals at night. They brought many
magical things that I could not find locally. I would not have known to look for
them. There was wwl with real blues, wnox with R at B,WCFL-WLS-WABC with rock 'nd
roll. They were all exciting and brought something different into the market.
Today everything is homogenized. You can take this way past this country. I just
came back from spending some time with two French women living in NYC who spent
8 months in Asia. They visited Tibet and Nepal along with Thailand and China.
They were universally disappointed over how homogenized the world has become.

When there were only 4 radio networks (including Mutual) and 4 TV networks (including Dumont) there was a limited amount of "mass" media. Sure, there were the local stations playing bluegrass, cajun, western swing and whatever, but those only reached a limited audience. The limited number of media choices did help to unify our culture, IMO, but now we have "multiculturalism" and a more divided society.
