No, say you have an automation system feeding another PC that does web 
streaming, rather than go sound card out to sound card in, you just use the 
virtual IP driver.  You may want to feed a stand alone editor to another machine.

Stretch things a bit, you could take some of these software based processors and 
  FM stereo encoders, feed from automation to processor to stereo generator all 
over IP.  A brave person could then use an 802.11a wireless link to send this to 
the transmitter all without ever going back to wired audio.

You may have a feed you want to monitor in several places. This would be a way 
to do it again without extra wiring and hardware.

The have analog and digital interfaces as well as Mic pre-amps and other devices 
that all work via IP.

If you ever need a small routing system that could be grown indefinitely, this 
would be the way.
