I went through that routine with Vonage and Tivo. Tivo currently will 
NOT work with Vonage, nor will any modem at speeds higher than 14.4. 
I had to force my Winfax modem down to 14.4 and consistently get 
nothing higher than 7200. The Vonage FAX line is intended for FAX 
machines that require no more than 14.4. Vonage told me there was no 
way Winfax would work. When Tivo told me the reason they were 
incompatible was because the Tivo modem gives up before reaching 14.4 
I tried to force my modem that slow and it worked for Winfax. It's 
terribly slow.

Beware of any data use with Vonage. Tivo says the next software 
release will allow the modem to slow down to VOIP speeds, though 
it'll be much slower than your current POTS connection. Also, Tivo 
says the USB port will work only with 802.11b, not g or a wired connection.
