Negative.  I used my tivo for a few years with a Netgear USB > 10/100 Wired
ethernet adapter, has have many others, there are a number of wires adapters
on the Tivo support page that are listed as being supported as well.

As far as the modem goes, if you REALLY want to get tivo over a voip line
now you can attach an external modem to the units serial port (need to build
a mini plug > dsub cable), force the external modem to connect at 14.4, and
then tell tivo to use that modem for its calls.  I posted a link to these
instructions a few months back when this discussion was going on,  if
antibody's interested I suppose you could search the archives and find it.
