Those "IC socket on a strip" things were made by Molex, I think. I tried
using them for a while, but the lack of a plastic body made the spring
contact with the chip leads get pretty bad after a while. Also, for a
while, TI was silver plating their leads. The silver would tarnish and
you'd have a bad connection. Not quite today's surface mount stuff!
